WHO Sounds Concern Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Fewer than 10% of people that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy can access them, caution the World Health Organization as it publishes its inaugural guidance on the medications.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide now living with obesity, it is calling for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

According to forecasts, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and ongoing care," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to broad availability to the jabs that can help people shift significant weight, says the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic outlook, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for about 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to increase availability, through approaches including patent sharing.

A patent on semaglutide – the primary ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Drugs Function

The injections replicate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost satiety so individuals consume fewer calories.

People commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Research indicates patients may see weight return after a year of halting the drug, as their normal hunger return.

Being overweight or obese raises your likelihood for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight affects individuals in all nations and was linked to 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
