Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
